Smart Locksmith Series: Connectivity, Gateways, and System Visibility
Connectivity is one of the defining characteristics of modern smart lock systems—and one of the most common sources of confusion in the field.
Many smart locks communicate locally using Bluetooth. This allows installers to set up and operate the lock when they are physically near the opening. Remote functionality, however, depends on a gateway that connects the lock system to the internet.

The distinction is simple, but the implications are significant.
Bluetooth enables local interaction. The gateway enables remote management.
Without a properly functioning gateway, features such as remote lock/unlock, real-time status updates, alerts, and system synchronization may not work as expected.
This is where installations often break down.
A lock may be installed correctly, paired successfully, and tested locally without issue. But if the gateway is improperly placed, disconnected, or operating on an unstable network, the customer will experience problems that appear to be hardware failures.
Common factors include signal range, wall construction, interference, power availability, and network reliability. A gateway placed too far from the lock, blocked by dense materials, or connected to inconsistent Wi-Fi can compromise system performance.
Installers do not need to become IT specialists, but they do need to understand the environment they are working in. Questions about network availability, access credentials, and device placement are now part of the installation process.
Verification is equally important.
Before leaving the site, installers should confirm that the lock reports status correctly, remote commands function where applicable, and the gateway remains online. If remote management is part of the customer’s expectation, it must be tested as part of the job.
Connectivity is also what enables system intelligence.
Once connected, modern platforms can generate alerts for conditions that would previously go unnoticed—doors left open, low batteries, failed access attempts, offline devices, or unusual activity patterns. Audit trails provide a record of who accessed an opening, when it occurred, and how access was granted or denied.
This shifts access control from a passive system to an active one.
Instead of waiting for a problem to be reported, the system can identify it in advance. A low battery becomes a maintenance task. A door-held-open alert leads to inspection of the closer or alignment. A pattern of denied access may trigger credential review or training.
The system begins to manage itself—but only if it is properly connected.
The takeaway is straightforward: Installing the lock is only part of the job. Ensuring the system communicates—and that the information it provides is accurate—is what makes the system useful.
